Getting Started
A general orientation for patients beginning a prescribed course of treatment. This is background information only — always follow your prescriber's advice.
Before you begin
What to understand as you start a prescribed course of treatment.
Who decides if this treatment is right for me?
A treatment is prescribed by an authorised health practitioner after assessing your individual situation. Whether medicinal cannabis is appropriate is a clinical decision made with your prescriber.
What questions should I ask my prescriber?
You may wish to ask about the goals of treatment, how and when to take your medicine, possible side effects, interactions with your other medications, and what to do if you have concerns.
Using your medicine
General principles for taking a prescribed product as directed.
How do I know how much to take?
Your prescriber sets an individualised dose and schedule. A common approach is to start low and adjust gradually under medical supervision. Always follow the instructions on your label.
Can I change my dose on my own?
No. Do not change your dose without first discussing it with your prescriber. Follow the directions you were given.
How long until I notice a difference?
This varies between people and products, and depends on the format used. Your prescriber can explain what to reasonably expect and when to follow up.
Safety and everyday life
Practical considerations while you are being treated.
What about driving?
Driving with THC in your system may be illegal and unsafe, even when prescribed. Check current state laws and never drive if you feel impaired.
Can it interact with my other medicines?
Yes, interactions are possible. Give your prescriber and pharmacist a complete list of everything you take, including over-the-counter products and supplements.
How should I store and handle my medicine?
Store as directed on the label, out of reach of children, and away from heat and light. Do not share your prescribed medicine with anyone else.
Getting support
Where to turn with questions along the way.
Who do I contact with questions?
Your prescriber can help with questions about your treatment, and your pharmacist can help with how to use a product or device. Keep their contact details handy.
What should I do about side effects?
Report anything severe or persistent to your care team. Seek medical advice promptly for unexpected effects, and in an emergency call 000.
